Professor Shawn Rodriguez
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt
Shawn Rodriguez began his journey in Mixed Martial arts and submission grappling in 2006. He studied Muay Thai/Sambo and NoGi Grappling at The Virginia Beach Academy of Martial Arts. In 2009, he decided to turn his focus strictly to Brazilian Jiujitsu. Impressed by it's effectiveness, he decided that would be his main focus. He has since been training under the teachings of 2nd degree black belt, Scott Oates; the 5th American to receive his black belt under Saulo Ribeiro.
In 2013, as a blue belt, Shawn received his Silver Star (a prestige patch) as well as a certification as a level-1 instructor in Ribeiro Jiujitsu from, Saulo Ribeiro. Over the years his love and passion for the art has shown through his teaching and eagerness in helping others learn. He works and communicates well with both adults and children. His way of interpreting techniques and breaking things down from the most novice student to the most advanced student is like no other.
In 2018, after years of dedication and hard work, Shawn received his Black Belt. On his path to Black Belt, he worked with world-class teachers and helped with training and preparing world-class athletes. With a smaller frame and stature, Shawn has learned to adapt and use technique rather than strength and force, which makes him see the techniques of the sport in a different way than others. With his unique point of view of movement he is able to make others understand a complex move and turn it into something simple to use as a part of their game.
Shawn holds medals in both local and regional tournaments. In addition to making Brazilian Jiujitsu part of his life, he has worked as a chef at a local restaurant for 10 years. He lives in , Virginia Beach and has a wife and daughter. His daughter attends Jiujitsu classes at VBJJ. His wife, who had been there since day one of his journey, encourages and supports both of them greatly.
