BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting (newaza) fundamentals that were taught by a number of individuals including Takeo Yano, Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of judo through Carlos and Hélio Gracie (who passed their knowledge on to their extended family) as well as other instructors who were students of Maeda, such as Luiz Franca.

BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.

Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of judo was separated from older systems of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: it is not solely a martial art, it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way (Do) of life.

Giving them the tools to diffuse the situation before it becomes physical.

Giving them the techniques to defend themselves from physical bullying by gaining control of the attacker until help arrives instead of utilizing more violent methods such as strikes.

WOMEN'S JIU-JITSU

This WOMEN'S ONLY CLASS is a great way to start your Jiu-Jitsu journey. All too often women will put everyone else first in most areas of life, while other women are very unsure of rolling with the men to start out in their Jiu-Jitsu journey. Unlike most self-defense systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, and coordination, the techniques in Jiu-Jitsu employ leverage, technique, and timing so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can make them work against larger opponents.

Our FREE Saturday Women's only class is for the women taught by women! Classes can cover a breakdown of beginners fundamentals and making adjustments for different body types and sizes, basic self defense, drilling moves, or body movements to help improve techniques. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches the smaller person how to defend against and defeat the larger or stronger person using technique and leverage.

ACCELERATED TRAINING
Virginia Beach Jiu-Jitsu Accelerated Training

Some people prefer to start with ACCELERATED TRAINING. Accelerated training enables the instructor to teach the lessons in the order that will optimize learning and to adapt techniques to suit an individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Each lesson begins with a review of previously learned techniques, followed by the introduction of 2-3 new techniques. Once you fully understand the new techniques, the instructor will show you how to combine them with previously learned techniques. Many students attend accelerated training until they are comfortable attending a regular class or in order to prepare for competitions or belt testing.
