BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting (newaza) fundamentals that were taught by a number of individuals including Takeo Yano, Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of judo through Carlos and Hélio Gracie (who passed their knowledge on to their extended family) as well as other instructors who were students of Maeda, such as Luiz Franca.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.
Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of judo was separated from older systems of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: it is not solely a martial art, it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way (Do) of life.

What will my child be learning in this program?
In the VBJJ Youth Program, not only will your kids learn the physical techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and self-defense, they will also learn the character traits of a good martial artist and citizen. The curriculum includes lessons on honesty, integrity, self-esteem, self-motivation, self-image, self-respect, trust, faithfulness, goodness, character, reliability, kindness, perseverance, humor, self-awareness, respect for others, listening skills, self-control, self-discipline, positive attitude, sharing, joy, love, patience, gentleness and peace.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will help your kids neutralize the threat of bullies by:
Giving them the confidence to stand up to various types of bullying, such as physical, emotional, or cyber.
Giving them the tools to diffuse the situation before it becomes physical.
Giving them the techniques to defend themselves from physical bullying by gaining control of the attacker until help arrives instead of utilizing more violent methods such as strikes.
WRESTLING | NO GI TRAINING
Wrestling or No-Gi Training is a combat sport involving grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. A No-Gi bout is a physical competition, between two (occasionally more) competitors or sparring partners, who attempt to gain and maintain a superior position. There are a wide range of styles with varying rules with both traditional historic and modern styles. No-Gi techniques have been incorporated into other martial arts as well as military hand-to-hand combat systems.
WOMEN'S JIU-JITSU
This WOMEN'S ONLY CLASS is a great way to start your Jiu-Jitsu journey. All too often women will put everyone else first in most areas of life, while other women are very unsure of rolling with the men to start out in their Jiu-Jitsu journey. Unlike most self-defense systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, and coordination, the techniques in Jiu-Jitsu employ leverage, technique, and timing so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can make them work against larger opponents.
Our FREE Saturday Women's only class is for the women taught by women! Classes can cover a breakdown of beginners fundamentals and making adjustments for different body types and sizes, basic self defense, drilling moves, or body movements to help improve techniques. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches the smaller person how to defend against and defeat the larger or stronger person using technique and leverage.

The ultimate goal of the Women's Program at Virginia Beach Jiu Jitsu, LLC is to build up and encourage confidence, self esteem and self worth of women and girls of all ages and experience levels. Stop in to our FREE Saturday class at 9 a.m. and see what jiu jitsu can do for you!
ACCELERATED TRAINING

Some people prefer to start with ACCELERATED TRAINING. Accelerated training enables the instructor to teach the lessons in the order that will optimize learning and to adapt techniques to suit an individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Each lesson begins with a review of previously learned techniques, followed by the introduction of 2-3 new techniques. Once you fully understand the new techniques, the instructor will show you how to combine them with previously learned techniques. Many students attend accelerated training until they are comfortable attending a regular class or in order to prepare for competitions or belt testing.
SHIVWORKS SELF DEFENSE

Virginia Beach Jiu-Jitsu is proud to be affiliated ShivWorks. Shivworks is a complete armed and unarmed self defense system that focuses on physical and mental conflicts that generally occur within arms length, “clinch range”. We offer interdisciplinary classes and coursework in all areas of defensive training – proven solutions that are trained under pressure and pressure tested to ensure the best possible outcome in a real world altercation. Our goal is to give every student the empty-hand skills of an MMA fighter, the firearm skills of a USPSA grand master, and the verbal agility of a stand-up comic. This may sound daunting, but ShivWorks has a proven track record of success in open-enrollment, corporate, and government venues.
Our Shivworks self defense program aims to instill core concepts of seamless integration and provide the platform for aggressive problem solving during a life or death struggle at arm’s length or closer. We emphasize the common body mechanics that apply across different skill sets. That way, all combative software is reinforcing. Once students’ skill sets are ingrained, they will be stress inoculated with force-on-force drills.
Students will gain a fundamental understanding of how to both employ and defend against empty hand, edged weapons, hand guns as well as other improvised weapons. The Shivworks curriculum is contextualized and presented through a minimalist framework. The modality of the training within the program builds a base operating system of Greco Roman wrestling right from the start. From this base, applications such as accessing a weapon or preventing an attacker from accessing their weapon in a deadly altercation, can easily be added. The base and applications give students a system of adequate, practical tools they can easily learn, remember, and put to immediate use.
In addition students will develop firearms and empty-hand techniques for encounters that occur in and around novel environments such as vehicles. The training is contextualized for the problems an unarmed and armed citizen might face while inside or near an automobile or multiple vehicles.
***Most of our basic foundational instruction within the school does not employ the use of firearms. Any Live Fire components of our training is conducted offsite at other locations. Components of this training may incur additional costs outside of the base tuition.***
